K-9 memorialized for work with sheriff\u2019s office<\/p>\n
Rex\u2019s paw on Jeff Sosebee\u2019s shoulder could brighten any day going in to work. \u201cSome say he\u2019s just a dog, but all these people looked in his eyes and saw something different. It\u2019s hard to explain, this animal,\u201d said Sosebee, who served as Rex\u2019s handler and partner. \u201cHe was my 32nd dog and the most amazing dog I\u2019ve ever worked with.\u201dLaw enforcement from Hall and Habersham counties gathered Tuesday afternoon to pay respects to Rex, who was put to sleep last month after a cancer diagnosis. Bagpipes echoed through the Hall County Government Center in Gainesville for the beloved dog who worked across North Georgia. Rex participated in 206 captures in his law enforcement career, working also in tracking, evidence recovery and searches. \u201cThe bond that is established between a K-9 and a handler goes beyond that working relationship,\u201d Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch said. \u201cThey become a member of a family, and that\u2019s exactly what Rex was.\u201d The K-9 officer would eventually work in Habersham County for the later part of his career. \u201cIf a bad guy came running in here, he\u2019d avoid all the people and he\u2019d go get the bad guy. That was Rex. He was that smart,\u201d Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell. James Moby Carney, known as \u201cMoby in the Morning\u201d on the radio, considered Rex to be the \u201cmost impressive police dog\u201d he had met. \u201cI believe I\u2019ll see my granddaddy again. I believe I\u2019ll see my mama and daddy again. And I believe you\u2019ll get to play with Rex some more,\u201d Carney said. Sosebee said Lance Animal Hospital had been caring for Rex before he was put to sleep in late October. Terrell remarked about the impressive turnout among fire departments, sheriff\u2019s offices and other law enforcement who cared for Rex. \u201cIt was friendships and bonds that were brought together that we as men and women couldn\u2019t forge ourselves, and it\u2019s lasting friendships to honor that memory of that dog,\u201d Terrell said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
