If all dogs go to heaven as the 1989 movie says, this one took a lot of love with him. Fredy, a Thomson Police Department K9, was laid to rest Friday at Westview Cemetery. Several friends from the community and law enforcement gathered to say goodbye to the canine that had served the community for more than seven years. \u201cHe was almost eight years old in dog years, and that is 56 for you and me,\u201d said handler Sgt. Scott Whittle. \u201cHe served in drug intervention and other areas in Thomson and surrounding communities for almost that entire time. He was a dedicated officer.\u201d Fredy, a German shepherd, was put to asleep earlier Friday, after Whittle, his caregiver, was told a spinal injury would not heal. \u201cWhile it is hard on others and myself,\u201d said the officer, \u201cit was what was best. I couldn\u2019t stand to see him suffer and he would have never gotten better. It was his time.\u201d A eulogy was given by McDuffie County Sheriff\u2019s Office Deputy Barry Whitfield. \u201cAll animals have a God-given right to live their life in peace just as we do,\u201d Whitfield said. \u201cThis memorial is remembering an act of service \u2013 a service worker \u2013 a partner \u2013 a friend and an intricate part of law enforcement,\u201d Whitfield said. \u201cIt is about how we feel about the service and the appreciation thereof \u2013 from all in law enforcement.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
