Police dog hit and killed<\/p>\n
The two-year-old was was being exercised during an operational shift when he ran onto a road and was hit by a truck.A police dog has died in an overnight hit-and-run in Sydney\u2019s southwest.Two-year-old Belgian Malinois Eddie was being exercised during an operational shift when he ran onto Jedda Rd in Prestons about 10.25pm on Tuesday.He was struck by a truck towing a trailer which did not stop at the scene, police said.Eddie suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to the vet however he died a short time later.The police dog was accredited in December last year and had been performing duties in metro Sydney.NSW Police say Eddie\u2019s handler is being supported by colleagues and the rest of the force.Superintendent Julian Griffiths said Eddie had been with the Police Dog Unit since he was born making the loss extra difficult.\u201cPolice dogs and their handlers have a bond like no other: they live together, they train together, they work hard together,\u201d he said.\u201cPolice dogs represent the very best of the force: General Purpose dogs are highly intelligent, highly trained, and motivated to work with their handlers to keep people safe.\u201cI am sure his loss will also be felt by the entire police family, and the broader community of NSW.\u201dThe truck involved in the incident has been described as a tipper towing a trailer.It was last seen on Jedda Rd heading towards the M7.An investigation will be conducted into the circumstances of Eddie\u2019s death.Anyone with information about the truck involved has been urged to come forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
