Retired K-9 officer remembered as \u2018an amazing dog\u2019<\/p>\n
Wednesday evening, dozens of local law enforcement paid tribute to one of their own. \u201cMy best friend and partner at work for many years passed away today. He was an amazing dog and he would have given his life to keep me safe and happy.\u201d Those are the words Dunscomb posted to social media after the passing of retired K-9 officer Kay Monday. Dunscomb said there\u2019s not enough he can say about the 13-year-old K-9 that served as his partner for seven years. \u201cFrom finding missing people to tracking suspects down to narcotics seizures, there\u2019s not one thing I can pinpoint,\u201d said Dunscomb. \u201cEverything he did was amazing and awesome.\u201d Kay retired from the West Lafayette Police Department in January of last year. During his years of service, Dunscomb describes Kay as constantly vigilant \u2014 always ready to jump in to protect his owner. Off duty, however, Dunscomb said Kay was the best dog and friend anyone could ask for. \u201cA small child could come up and literally\u00a0ride on his back two minutes after he had just apprehended a suspect,\u201d said Dunscomb. \u201cHe was that good that he could just flip the switch and go back to being a pet that easily.\u201d Dunscomb\u00a0said Kay\u2019s spirit and dedication to his role was well-known throughout the West Lafayette Police Department, and his service was respected by all who knew him. \u201cOfficers were in the squad\u00a0room crying,\u201d said Dunscomb. \u201cThey were devastated.\u201d As a way to pay tribute to Kay and his service, a surprise procession was held Wednesday evening. Dunscomb said words cannot describe what he felt as the final 10-42 was called for Kay, and said the procession was as big as Kay\u2019s spirit. \u201cI\u2019ll remember his happy-go-lucky\u00a0nature,\u201d said Dunscomb. \u201cHe was always a hundred miles an hour. No matter what.\u201d Kay was laid to rest on the property of a friend in Fountain County \u2014 a spot, Dunscomb said, that was one of Kay\u2019s favorite places to play.<\/p>\n
