Carteret Police Mourn K-9 \u2018Officer\u2019 Ukon\u2019s \u2018End-of-Watch\u2019<\/p>\n
The borough Police Department is mourning the recent death of retired K-9 \u2018Officer\u2019 Ukon, a German Shepherd who served the community with distinction alongside handler Sgt. Antonio M. Dominguez.In a poignant June 19th Facebook post, Carteret Policemen\u2019s Benevolent Association (PBA) Local 47 announced Ukon\u2019s passing, citing \u201cend-of-watch,\u201d customary police jargon for an officer\u2019s retirement or passing.In a follow-up post, the police union reassured residents that they are still \u201cin good hands\u201d with current K-9 \u2018Officers\u2019 Lando and Riley, partnered with Detective Eric Guzman, a six-year veteran.Writing about Ukon, the PBA wrote, in part:\u201cWith the help of Ukon, police departments across the State of New Jersey were able to secure multiple narcotic arrests and make (our) communities safer. Ukon\u2019s hard work and friendly demeanor will be missed by all the officers of our department. We will be keeping Tony, Brittany, Elizabeth and Elena in our thoughts and prayers and we wish Ukon a safe travel over the rainbow bridge. Heaven is getting one of our finest.\u201dThe post refers to Sgt. Dominguez\u2019s wife and children, with whom Ukon became a cherished family member. Dominguez is a 12-year police veteran.Writing about the department\u2019s current K-9\u2019s Lando and Riley, PBA Local 47 wrote: \u201cWe want to assure everyone that the town is in good hands with Carteret\u2019s current K-9 unit. Lando and Riley are much like their partner, Detective Eric Guzman. Big and scary on the outside, and warm and friendly on the inside. Lando is trained in narcotics and Riley is trained in explosives. They proudly serve the town and are following in Ukon\u2019s footsteps.\u201dDetective Guzman, Sgt. Dominguez and two PBA Local 47 officials declined to answer basic questions about the age(s), breeds and length-of-service for their K-9 partners.
