Miami-Dade police mourns death of beloved K9 officer<\/p>\n
It is with a heavy heart that the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department announces the passing of K-9 Officer Gideon. K-9 Officer Gideon began suffering from health issues in March, and after waging a valiant battle, succumbed to his illness on June 4th, 2023. Though K-9 Officer Gideon was with us for only eight years, he leaves behind a legacy that will always be remembered. K-9 Officer Gideon was a Labrador Retriever, born in Colombia on October 10, 2014. After completing Canine Detection Handler School, he was paired with Officer Karlos Ramos in 2016. Together, they worked the afternoon shift, protecting our facilities and the community. K-9 Officer Gideon assisted in contraband and perimeter searches throughout our facilities, helping to maintain institutional safety and security. K-9 Officer Gideon quickly proved himself as a tremendous asset to the Department, and would become known as one of our most effective Canine Officers. K-9 Officer Gideon and Officer Ramos developed a strong bond immediately. Their mutual trust \u2013 along with K-9 Officer Gideon\u2019s excellent tracking ability \u2013 led to a number of narcotics detections early in their partnership. Gideon\u2019s name is biblical. Gideon means “Mighty Warrior”, and that’s what K-9 Officer Gideon was to us, a “Mighty Warrior”. \u201cGideon is remembered for his intelligence, commitment to the job, and personality,\u201d said Director James Reyes. \u201cHe is also remembered for his numerous contributions to public safety made while performing his duties.\u201d Over the course of K-9 Officer Gideon\u2019s career, he and Officer Ramos had well over 2,900 training hours with nearly 120,000 career sniffs. Gideon\u2019s favorite part of the job was getting to visit with the numerous kids over the years at the various demonstrations with organizations and schools.
