Police force farewells ‘partner, defender, friend’

He was made famous after stopping an unwary offender that broke into his handler’s home and now has the thoughts and well wishes of the entire police force. Retired Toowoomba Police Dog Xero died unexpectedly last night after serving seven years on the force alongside handler Senior Constable Chad McLeod. Xero was born in 2006 and entered the police force in 2008 alongside his brother, PD Vice, in Toowoomba. He was qualified as a Special Emergency Response Team dog and had also served as a general purpose dog for seven years in Toowoomba and Brisbane. Xero was made famous after he busted a burglar who broke into Snr Const. McLeod’s house in 2009. While off-duty, PD Xero and Snr Const. McLeod tracked the offender who was later charged with entering a dwelling with intent, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and stealing. But it was after the G20 Summit in 2014 that Xero retired from the service, living out his days with Snr Const. McLeod and his family and two operational dogs. Xero also starred in the 2016 QPS Dog Squad calendar. “Xero was a legendary dog and much more than just a partner,” the QPS said in a statement. “He was an incredible career and was loyal and loving. “He will be sorely missed.”
