The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office lost a 9-year-old, K-9 name Sony after the dog suddenly became sick and passed away Tuesday. A sad day for the Fresno County Sheriffs Office as well as the community. The sheriff’s office issued a final call saying, “Sony thank you for your loyalty, bravery, and dedication to the citizens of Fresno County.” Sony, showed signs of illness Tuesday morning. He was taken to the hospital where he had an unsuspected medical condition. Sony passed away at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday. “He was a teddy bear, he liked going to school demo’s meeting with children at school events,” said Deputy Isaac Cervantes who was Sony’s handler. Sony’s body was carried out in a small wooden coffin draped with an American flag and taken from the Sierra View Animal Hospital to the Fresno Pet Cemetery. The German Sheppard was trained to search vehicles and find missing children began showing symptoms and Cervantes said he immediately took him to the vet. “His normal behavior is happy, prancing, he loves to work, but this was a night and day behavior for him,” he said. Doctors told Cervantes that Sony died from Gastric Torsion or Bloat. “It’s fatal in dogs if it’s not caught within 15 minutes,” he said. Unit Chaplain for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, Shannan Schwamb said Sony was a wonderful dog loved by many. Several agencies gathered at the cemetery to pay their respects to Sony.”Truly, the streets have lost a very good K-9,” said Schwamb. The Sheriffs Department said he was a valuable part of the Sheriff’s Office. He specialized in searching buildings and locating missing people. An unofficial procession was held Wednesday at noon as he leaves the Sierra View Animal Hospital. He was laid to rest at the Fresno Pet Cemetery.
