Died – 7/28/20
Handler – Ofc. Strappazon

We are sad to announce that a beloved member of our police department suddenly passed away during emergency surgery after learning of a sudden medical condition. K9 Jayda was donated to the Matteson Police Department in 2016. K9 Jayda and her handler Ofc. Strappazon were responsible for many large scale drug and illicit money seizures. In June of 2018, they were recognized for their role assisting the Chicago Police Department Criminal Enterprise Division in the detection and recovery of approximately 1,700 pounds of illegal narcotics with an estimated street value of approximately 10 million dollars. Also, In October of 2018, K9 Jayda and Ofc. Strappazon assisted DEA in stopping a Mercedes Sprinter Van driven by a known narcotics dealer. K9 Jayda detected drug odor intermingled with currency and during the drug interdiction operation over 2 million dollars was seized. The Sprinter van was also seized and is being used by the Matteson Police Department as a Community Service and Evidence Collection vehicle. These are just a few examples of their hard work and dedication. K9 Jayda was also a favorite of the community. She put on numerous K9 demonstrations for children in classrooms and many public community gatherings. Jayda was the favorite Matteson Police officer when a group of Matteson Officers visited Camp Quality two summers ago for children with cancer. Ofc. Strappazon also taught a class for the Citizens Police Academy with Jayda each year. It is very difficult to lose a K9, especially suddenly. Ofc. Strappazon and Jayda work all day or night and also live together. They are practically inseparable. Through their co-training, they develop a bond that makes them more than just working partners. Please join us in our condolences for Ofc. Strappazon and remembrance of K9 Jayda. She was a good dog and a great Matteson officer. Rest in Peace Jayda. You served Matteson well. K9 Jayda is the mother of Matteson Fire Arson K9 Mazie. Thank you K9 Jayda for your service and dedication.
