Poteet ISD K9 succumbs after rattlesnake bite
Poteet ISD is paying tribute to K9 Ewa who succumbed to her injuries and passed away after battling a rattlesnake bite on Oct. 29, according to the district’s Facebook page.Ewa’s steadfast devotion to duty and strong spirit will be greatly missed by her handler Lieutenant Jason Velasquez, the Velasquez family, the Poteet ISD Police Department, Poteet Independent School District and to all who had the privilege of interacting with Ewa, who always displayed an assertive and loving demeanor to all. The district honors Ewa for her remarkable dedication as a Narcotic K9 Officer within the Poteet ISD Police Department and her selfless dedication to duty. Ewa, 4, was a female Belgian Malinois born in Poland and adopted from the Military Working Dog program at Lackland Air Force Base. Ewa faithfully served beside her partner Lieutenant Velasquez for two years during her tenure as a narcotic K9 and assisted with well over 1,000 searches during her service as a police K9 officer, according to Poteet ISD. A typical workday entailed daily deployment searches and training searches which yielded results that deterred drug use or abuse within the school district. Ewa specialized in searching for all four narcotics listed as Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin and Methamphetamine as she was nationally certified by the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association.Ewa was not only a partner, but a beloved family member who will be deeply missed.
