Belmont Police pay tribute to retired K9 Dutch

The Belmont Police Department recently announced that a retired Police K-9 named Dutch passed away at nearly 16-years-old on Feb. 23.Dutch was born in September 2008, and first came to the Belmont Police Department in 2010, at which point he was assigned to his first partner, Officer Kevin Wingate, the department said in a post to their Facebook page. After five years of assisting Wingate in seizing narcotics and locating criminals, Dutch was assigned to Officer Kreston Seigler in 2015 when Wingate left the department to pursue other career opportunities, the post said.Dutch was medically retired at the end of 2018 after being diagnosed with hip dysplasia and was returned to Wingate, who cared for Dutch for the remainder of his life.”Though Dutch may no longer patrol our streets or chase down criminals, the memory of K9 Dutch will live on in our hearts forever,” the post said. “Dutch was known for scaring people when he barked as they walked by his car.””Dutch was more than just a police dog; he was a cherished member of our law enforcement family. Through countless patrols, searches, and other K9 operations, Dutch demonstrated remarkable courage and selflessness, putting his life on the line to keep others safe,” the post said. “His loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working with him, as well as the entire community he served. But in our sorrow, we find solace in knowing that Dutch leaves behind a legacy of service and sacrifice that will never be forgotten.”
