Westminster PD K9 dies
The Westminster police dog, Dexter, died Monday, said his handler, Sgt. Chad “Isaac” Moore. Dexter was hit by a car on July Fourth after he was startled by fireworks and broke out of the enclosure he was in at Moore’s home. The dog underwent surgery for back and leg injuries, and had appeared to be recovering. The 7-year-old German shepherd died around 2:30 p.m. Monday, Moore said.”My wife and I and Lt. Josh Eppes held Dexter as he took his last breath,” Moore said through a prepared statement. “I appreciate the outstanding care he received at Upstate Veterinary Specialists in Greenville. I also appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers. I ask that you continue to pray for my family and the Westminster Police Department during this difficult time.”Because Dexter was Moore’s personal dog and was not at work at the time of the incident, Moore is responsible for the medical bills. The city has set up an account to assist with payment of those bills, which total several thousand dollars. Donations to the account can be made at Community First Bank in Westminster.
