Brevard Sheriff’s Office Says Goodbye to Retired K-9 ‘Cargo’ After Dedicated Service to BCSO, US Marine Corp
Earlier today, members of our Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and our K-9 Unit said goodbye to retired K-9 “Cargo” who served our agency from 2015 until retiring in 2017. K-9 “Cargo” started as an explosives detection dog in 2011 with the United States Marine Corp and deployed in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.On this deployment, during an intense firefight, Cargo’s lead was severed by a bullet and he was separated from his handler. His handler feared he was lost or even possibly captured by Taliban, due to the bounty the Taliban placed on these dogs since they saved so many lives, when a few hours after the firefight ended, Cargo came running through the front gate of the base. In 2013 he was transferred to Alaska to work with the TSA checking Cargo, of course!! Then in 2015 he was transferred back to Lackland AFB and was without a handler.K-9 “Cargo” officially began his career with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in 2015 where he served as an Explosive Detection Dog, after BCSO Deputy Robert Aoun, saw him at the base during a training.Since Cargo was without a handler, Deputy Aoun convinced them to let him become his partner.Throughout his career he provided road clearing for vehicles and our military overseas, cargo checks at our port, and even security to Presidents, Vice Presidents, Kings, Queens and other royalty. “Cargo” proudly served our agency and our great country for 6 years prior to his well deserved retirement from the job.“Cargo” lived a spoiled life at home with Deputy Aoun, his wife Sgt. Jacqueline Hearon, and their loving family.In his final car ride K-9 “Cargo” was escorted by our K-9 Units, and members of our agency, to his final resting place in Titusville.A special thank you to our wonderful friends at Animal Specialty and Emergency Hospital in Viera and Best Friend’s Cremation in Titusville for their kind and compassionate care of our furry hero, K-9 “Cargo”
